
Head Start ~ Cooperative Experience
Through this coop, I have gained experience in both a pediatric and community setting. I have assisted the RD with child weight/height assessments, worked with HSFIS and Microsoft Access computer programs that are used under the CHCFP program, prepared parent education for monthly menus, and I am currently working on a nutrition label project. In addition, I assist with tallying meal counts in order to meet program requirements, as well as assisting with a family fun night.
Lutheran Sunset Home ~ Clinical Experience & Resident Assistant
Through my clinical experience with a RD in a long-term care setting, I was able to gain insight in both a clinical and food-service setting. I analyzed records of residents who were at nutritional risk, looking at their intake, previous and current chronic conditions, as well as previous and current medications. I then discussed findings with the RD, followed by charting in a resident's record, which was then signed by the RD. I was also able to participate in Care Conferences with resident families, and provided assistance for residents during the breakfast and noon meals. In addition, I assisted with the tray-line food service delivery system, and got a hands-on tour of the kitchen equipment, refrigerator, freezer, and storage spaces.
Through my work experience in a long-term care setting, I was able to gain experience in both a clinical and food-service setting. I provided assistance for residents during mealtime, prepared and passed snacks/beverages according to residents' requests and/or needs, and recorded intake for residents following the meal and snack. Through this work experience, I became very familiar with thickened liquids and therapeutic diets. In addition, my communication skills were strengthened through interaction with clients and staff.
N.D. Developmental Center ~ Shadowing Experience
Through my shadowing experience at the North Dakota State Developmental Center, I was able to get hands-on experience with a tray- line food service delivery system, view the preparation and planning of all the therapeutic diet menus, and observe Gastrointestinal specialty team consultations for state residents. Through this experience, I learned a great deal about the varying responsibilities of an RD working for the state.
MeritCare South University Hospital ~ Food Service, Cook-in-Training, & Volunteer
Through my experience as a cold production worker, cook-in-training, and volunteer through the MeritCare health system, I was able to obtain additional food service experience in a clinical setting, in addition to being trained as a morning cook. I learned about the numerous responsibilities of a cook when in charge of providing meals for all patients in a 100+ bed hospital. I also practiced safety and sanitation procedures, and assisted with the preparation of both hot and cold food items. Most recently, I have started to volunteer weekly in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the larger MeritCare campus, where I assist with infant laundry, pick up pharmacy orders, and assist with crying infants. Through all of my experiences within the MeritCare hospital setting, I believed that I have gained knowledge in not only a clinical and food service setting, but in addition I have enhanced my communication skills, leadership skills, work ethic, and an increased desire for personal responsibility.
Partner's in Learning ~ Work Study
Through my work study experience with Partner's-in-Learning, I gained experience working with different ethnic and under deserving populations. I was able to assist with infant care for parents working to complete a GED or ESL program. I prepared bottles and provided breakfast for infants and toddlers. I also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with parents as a tutor for English and Science. Through this experience, I feel better prepared to work with an ethnically-diverse population in a community setting.
C-400/Advancement Office, Concordia College ~ Work Study
Through my work study experience in the C-400/Advancement Office, I have been able to assist with mailings and phone calls for fundraisers and donations through this department of the college. Through this work study experience, I have learned of the importance of giving back to the community and the operations that go on within the annual giving department.
Westside Drive-In ~ Carhop/Waitress
Through my experience at a drive-in restaurant, I prepared and delivered food, ice cream, and drink orders, as well as opening and closing duties. I learned a great deal about the importance of customer interaction and satisfaction, and I was able to enhance my people skills and confidence in interacting with others.
